Modern and Comfortable: Surgical Department Renovated at Mykolaiv City Hospital No. 5

Published on 11.06.2025

Despite the ongoing war, Mykolaiv continues to modernize its healthcare infrastructure. One of the latest improvements is the complete renovation of the surgical department at Hospital No. 5 — one of the city’s largest medical institutions, located in the Korabelnyi district. The inpatient ward underwent a major overhaul. Around 170 patients receive treatment at the department each month, and from now on, they will benefit from care in more modern and comfortable conditions.

This important project was made possible through the joint efforts of the Mykolaiv Regional Branch of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society, the Netherlands Red Cross, and the Luxembourg Red Cross.

The initiative involved comprehensive renovations, including upgraded lobbies, patient rooms, restrooms, and staff facilities — all meeting modern accessibility standards.

Head of the Mykolaiv City Health Department Iryna Shamray emphasized the strategic importance of Hospital No. 5, which serves not only Mykolaiv residents.

“This facility plays a vital role in delivering medical care not only to residents of the Korabelnyi and Vitovskyi districts but also to people from the Kherson region. The hospital treats a large number of patients from this neighboring area, helping ensure access to quality healthcare services,” said Iryna Shamray.

Anton Dubovyk, Deputy Head of the Mykolaiv Branch of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society, noted that the decision to modernize this specific department was based on the hospital’s significant role in the healthcare systems of both Mykolaiv and Kherson regions.

The Head of the Surgical Department, Viacheslav Lukianchenko, explained that the ward can accommodate up to 40 patients at a time, and around 170 individuals are treated monthly — many of whom have suffered as a result of the war. Approximately 90 surgeries are performed each month.

“I’m confident that after the renovation, our patients will experience much greater comfort during treatment. Surgery is a complex field of medicine. Patients need not only high-quality care but also proper recovery conditions. In fact, about 70% of a patient’s recovery success depends on the environment in which they are treated,” emphasized Viacheslav Lukianchenko.

Secretary of the Mykolaiv City Council Dmytro Falko expressed gratitude to the Red Cross and everyone who contributed to the project.

“Everything here has been done to a very high standard. Your contribution is invaluable. Thank you for everything you do,” said Dmytro Falko.

It is worth noting that this renovation marks the second phase of the surgical department’s modernization at Hospital No. 5. The first phase was completed at the end of last year with support from the International Organization for Migration and funding from the Government of Denmark.
