USAID (United States Agency for International Development) is an agency for international development, which operates under the patronage of the U.S. Government. The organization started its work in 1961.
The main goal of USAID is to help its partners become self-sufficient and capable of managing their own development. Achievements in this process are possible by reducing the scale of conflicts, preventing the spread of pandemic diseases, and countering the factors of violence, instability, transnational crime, and other security threats.
The organization cooperates with governments, nonprofit organizations, academic institutions, and other stakeholders to achieve its goals.
USAID and Ukraine
The development cooperation strategy of USAID with Ukraine in 2019-2024 was approved with a focus on anti-corruption activities, countering the influence of Russian aggression, as well as promoting the country's economic development and energy independence. Besides, USAID continues to support measures to strengthen democracy and good governance mechanisms, improve health systems, and mitigate the impact of the conflict in the east of Ukraine.
USAID Energy Security Project
The Energy Security Project has been implemented in Ukraine from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2023. Its main goal is to help Ukraine improve its energy security.
The main objective of the project is to help create and develop free market mechanisms in the energy sector. Support for the activities of the main institutions in this sector lays the foundation for the implementation of one of the main elements of the development cooperation strategy of USAID with Ukraine.
The Energy Security Project focused on helping the Government of Ukraine ensure reliable, uninterrupted and safe power supply for individuals at an affordable cost, integration into European energy markets by assisting the main institutions and the regulator of the energy sector in complying with the requirements of EU legislation (in particular, the provisions of the Third Energy Package), in improving energy security through the creation of competitive markets in the electric power industry, in supplying natural gas and heat, as well as in increasing the volume of available energy resources by supporting private investment in the development and greater utilization of renewable energy sources.
